CAPT Labyak was my XO at NRDNY in East Meadow, Long Island, NY, many years ago. What a wonderful and long lasting positive influence he had on me as I was returning to active duty. His counsel was always fitting and professional. His friendship is still with me. Fair winds and following seas, CAPT Labyak.

I did not know Captain Labyak personally but I served under him on the U.S.S Samuel Gompers. I served under 3 captains during my tour on the Gompers and Captain Labyak was my favorite. We all liked him as a captain and respected his immense knowledge of the sea. He ran a show at sea called "Yakity Yak with Labyak" which was really cool. I was sad to hear of his passing. My deep sympathies to his family and friends.

Gail and Family,
As you know, throughout a Naval career, we are privileged to meet hundreds of exceptional people. I must say that during my 29 years of active duty, I never met an officer more dedicated to the service nor more supportive of his people than Pete (or CHENG as he was affectionately known on the USS INDEPENDENCE). Not only did he look after the people in his department, he was the mentor for all "black shoes" on the carrier. His professionalism, leadership and sense of humor was unexceled. May you find comfort in knowing that his memory will be forever carried forward by those who were priviliged to know him. As he would often say, "Either lead, follow, or get the heck out of the way."

We were saddened to hear of Peter's passing. While we only knew him for a brief time, our lives were much richer for it. Our condolences to his family.

Dear Labyak Family,
We are so sorry we can't be there today to celebrate the life of Capt Labyak. He is one of the larger than life characters from my childhood, never to busy to talk to an adolescent about life. I owe much to your family for making me a part of yours. I tell my kids that a large part of where you end up in life depends on who your role models are, and "the Captain" was influential in my engineering school (calculus tutor), and my military service. I thank God for his influence in my life.

Pete was a man like no other and we will miss him every day, especially when we look out our window and don't see him puttering in the yard or sitting on the deck enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail. We are very sad, especially as we could not make the service but will see you soon.
