Bettye Davis Obituary

Bettye Davis NORFOLK - Bettye Davis, 80, a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother, went to be with the Lord Thursday, March 5, 2009. Bettye was born in Sanford, N.C., to the late Waley Vestal and Ruby Kelly Thomas July 27, 1928. She married her love, Lloyd Carl Davis of Norfolk on Dec. 18, 1949. She was a member of the Wedgewood Garden Club in Norfolk, the Federation Garden Clubs, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and a former member of the Social Order of the Beauceant. She taught cake decorating and the Bishop Method of Clothing Construction and tailoring in the City of Norfolk recreation centers. She had a longtime hobby researching and recording genealogy. She also enjoyed road trips with her husband throughout the United States making and visiting many friends along the way. She adopted the many people she met and always had a hug for everyone ending every conversation with "I love you!" She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 59 years, retired U.S. Navy Lt. Lloyd C. Davis; her four children, Michael Thomas Davis Sr. and wife Donna of Herndon, Va., Richard Vestal Davis and wife Sabrina of Virginia Beach, Jackie Ellen Davis of Norfolk and Jeffrey James Davis and wife Rowena of Norfolk; two sisters, Norma L. Roy of Long Barn, Calif., and J. Carolyn Scanio and husband Thomas of Tampa, Fla.; six grandchildren, Michael T. Davis Jr., Rebeckah K. Davis and Heather L. Davis, all of Herndon, Sgt. John Christopher Lloyd, currently deployed to Iraq out of Fort Riley, Kan., and wife Courtney of Manhattan, Kan., Matthew S. Davis and Justin L. Davis, both of Norfolk; one great-granddaughter, Aundrea M. Lloyd of Manhattan, Kan.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Mary Jean Hurley. A celebration of life will be conducted by Pastor Robert Pittman Monday at 1 p.m. in Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. Committal will follow in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Cemetery, Suffolk. The family will receive friends Sunday at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and open visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. To share condolences with the family please visit www.altmeyer.com.
