Edythe Owen Obituary

Edythe D. Owen KERNERSVILLE - Edythe Virginia Dalton Owen, 80, died March 9, 2009, at home. She was born March 24, 1928, in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, to the late Melvin and Ruby Elizabeth Claiborne Dalton. Mrs. Owen was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. She loved tennis, golf, Mahjong and playing bridge. Edythe was a movie and theatre affectionado. A resident of Virginia Beach, she enjoyed spending the winter months in North Palm Beach, Fla. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Austin Everett Owen III. Surviving are three daughters, Judith O. Hopkins, M.D. and husband Marbry of Kernersville, Elizabeth Scaff and husband David of Palm Beach, Fla., Martha Owen and companion Robert Alderman of Virginia Beach; one son, Austin Everett Owen IV and wife Valorie of Kauai, Hawaii; seven grandchildren, Benjamin Hopkins, Martha Scaff, David Hillary Scaff, Henry Highton III, Berkley Highton, Mikeala Owen and Teak Owen. A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in Galilee Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach. Burial will follow in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to either St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 or the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Theatre, Singleton Performing Arts Center, 922 Park Ave., Richmond, VA 23284.
