Lucille Joyner Obituary

Lucille W. Joyner PORTSMOUTH - Lucille W. Joyner, 87, of the 1400 block of Atlanta Ave., died June 16, 2009. A native of Wilson County, North Carolina, she was the widow of Robert Sherman Joyner and a member of Fourth Baptist Church where she was past president of the Senior Choir for more than 30 years. Mrs. Joyner retired after more than 20 years with the Portsmouth public school system, was a former member of Order of the Eastern Star, an avid gardener, and loved to fish with her favorite fishing partner, who preceded her in death, Catherine A. Josey. Survivors include her children, Chester Lee Steward Sr. and Frances Walker Steward; two adopted sons, Robert Lee Walker and Willie Cuffee; two sisters, Margaret Walker and Catherine M. Josey; a brother, James Walker of Sharpsburg, N.C.; three grandchildren, Chester Jr. (Donya), Christopher (Tanisha) and Dianna; six great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Fourth Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles Beamon. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Fisher Funeral Home, 1520 Effingham St., Portsmouth, is in charge. Viewing will begin Monday at noon and the body will be in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends at the residence today and Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. The family will assemble at the church at 10:30 a.m. prior to the services and would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Sentara Nursing Center, Portsmouth, for the care shown to the family.

In loving memory of an awesome woman who taught me so much. When I heard of a passing I was deeply saddened. After years of not seeing her I went to visit her and she was no more. Shes singing with the Angels. God bless her family. The memory of her goodness will always be with me.
