Charles Elliott Obituary

Charles Marsh Elliott NEWVILLE, Pa. - Charles Marsh Elliott died Sunday, May 17, 2009, in Newville, Pa. Charles was born to Charles Hull and Louise Marsh Elliott in Alexandria, Va. He graduated from Washington & Lee High School in Arlington, and Waynesburg College, Pennsylvania, where he met and married Bettie Lou "Betz" Riefer. Charles was commissioned into the U.S. Navy after completing officer's training in Newport, R.I. His ports included Philadelphia, San Diego, and Norfolk where he served as a Fifth District Headquarters engineer, first on active duty, then as a civilian, retiring in 1985. He also served the U.S. Navy Reserve and retired a U.S. Navy commander. Charles is survived by his daughter, Karen Elliott, her husband John Thorp, and grandchildren, Emma and David Thorp; his brother, John and his wife Margaret; nephew John; and nieces, Margaret and Elizabeth. While serving in Norfolk, Charles and his family lived in Virginia Beach and were proud to be charter members of King's Grant Presbyterian Church, where they worshipped and served for more 40 years. In 2004, Charles and Betz moved to Newville, Pa. They made Big Spring Presbyterian their new church home where many of Charles' ancestors worshipped since the 1700s. Charles will be greatly missed for his compassion, integrity and fine sense of humor. He lives now with our Heavenly Father, no longer bound by the pain and frustrations of Earth. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 28, in Kings' Grant Presbyterian Church, 745 Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach. Memorial contributions may be made to: The Hermitage, 11321 Dutch Settlement Road, Three Rivers, MI, 49093, www.hermitagecommunity.org. The Egger Funeral Home Inc. of Newville, Pa., is handling the arrangements.
