Lori Lucero Obituary

Lori A. Lucero NORFOLK - Lori A. Lucero, 48, of the 400 block of Kingsley Lane, died June 21, 2009, in her home. Mrs. Lucero was born in Annapolis, the daughter of retired U.S. Navy Capt. Kenneth G. Smith and Patricia Furlong Smith. Mrs. Lucero was a 1979 graduate of Franklin High School in Franklin, Tenn., and a 1983 graduate of Vanderbilt School of Nursing. She had a lifetime career as a registered nurse. She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Norfolk. Mrs. Lucero was an avid cyclist, tri-athlete, and a longtime member of the Tri Power-Contes Cycling Club. Survivors include her parents; her husband, Daniel Lucero; three brothers, Thomas Smith of Nashville, Tenn., Gregory Smith of Norfolk, Mark Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; aunt and uncle, Gary and Ann Smith of Fairfax; and aunt, Rosalie Curtin of Annapolis, Md. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27, in the Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Norfolk by the Rev. David Davenport. Lori was a lover of animals, having adopted several rescue dogs (particularly Shelties) and cats. She actively supported animal anti-cruelty causes, and in lieu of flowers would appreciate donations be made to the Norfolk SPCA or local humane societies. Lori was a very generous and loving wife and friend to many. Her wonderful sense of humor, infectious laugh, and willingness to help those in need will all be greatly missed. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.hdoliver.com.

Dan,

I am so sorry for your loss. I will never forget that fun times that the three of us had riding our bikes, running, swimming and most importantly laughing together. Lori had so much energy and life voulenteering at those ultradistance events I did, her smile was always something to look forward to.

Dan, my heart goes out to you and the Smith family. I met you when visiting Tom Smith in Nashville, but remember Lori since she was in fourth grade (as I was a high school and track buddy of Tom). No doubt will miss her big smile, one of a kind laugh, and love of life. I saw her grow up through various stages of her life when catching up with the Smith family here and there over the years from various parts of the country. Remember our thoughts and prayers are with you from out family in Arizona. Tom Verploegen

Dan, I am very saddened to hear about Lori. It was my pleasure to have her as a friend and a person you could always get a smile from. I will remember the days she was a dominate force on the TRIPOWER womens racing team and the hours you and her spent volunteering your personal time for extreme athletes to compete in those grueling multiple day competitions. Lori was a very special person that I will always remember. Take care Dan. Lori would want you to be strong for her and continue to do great things with your life. Truely, yours,

Steve Simet

Dan,Lori and I were very good high school buddies. We had more laughs together even when we were T-boned in her little car in Triune,TN.I know that the ER nurses thought we were drunk but we had been eating many M&Ms and drinking Dr.Pepper and listening to Steve Martin. Not even a curtain between us could keep us from laughing.I will miss her. What a wonderful family...
