Evelyn Thimedes Obituary

Evelyn Thimedes VIRGINIA BEACH - Evelyn Thimedes, 87, of the 4800 block of Kempsville Greens Parkway, died Monday, June 22, 2009, in a local hospital. Born in Norfolk October 1921, she was the daughter of the late Chrysanthos and Chrysi Proimos Themides. She was a graduate of Mary Washington University and spent many years as an educator, mostly in Venezuela and Germany. Evelyn arrived in Bad Toelz, Germany, in 1954 where she became a dearly beloved first grade teacher in the American school for children of soldiers stationed in Germany after World War II. The first Special Forces, later named Green Berets, by John F. Kennedy, were assigned to this Bavarian base near the Austrian border the year before her arrival. Long lasting friendships were made within the German community as well as with American Special Forces who called Bad Toelz "The Garden of Eden." Evelyn enjoyed travel during vacations and especially visits to Greece, her ancestors' homeland. In 1982, she retired and returned to Virginia. She was a member of Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral and an associate member of the Retired Special Forces. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, sister, Helen T. Eagan and brothers, James, Christopher and Michael Themides. Survivors include her sister, Antoinette and brother-in-law Dr. T.V. Pangalos; sisters- in-law, Carolyn P. Themides and Kathryn Themides; best friend and adopted sister, Doris C. Baker; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins who were dear to her. A funeral will be held in Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Thursday, June 25, at 11 a.m. by the Very Rev. Father Seraphim Poulos, D.M. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The Trisagion service will be held in the Norfolk chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., today at 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Leonard Strelitz Diabetes Institute, 855 W. Brambleton Ave., Norfolk, VA 23510.

Evelyn was the personification of generosity. She will always be remembered by us as an extension of our own family, as she knitted herself into our hearts. She visited Cyprus while stationed at school in Germany, and became a greatly esteemed visitor among the Georgiades clan of Kyrenia. She will be fondly remembered. There was wisdom beneath that smile. She was a joy to converse with. We shall miss her, and yet, our reflections of the good times past will be her estate.

Evelyn was a wise and witty woman who enjoyed a fulfilling and meaningful life. I will always remember visiting her in Bad Toelz and getting to know her as a real individual, not only as a relative. Her lifelong love of learning and her inquisitive mind, along with her generous spirit, made a difference in many lives, and the world has lost a great soul. Our sincere sympathy and deep condolences to her dear friend and companion Doris, and to the rest of her family, but please take consolation from the knowledge that Evelyn's was truly a life well lived. "May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!"

With love from Diane Kyrus, Joanne Jenkins, David Jenkins and Suzanne Jenkins
