Amanda Lee Newbern VIRGINIA BEACH - Amanda Lee Newbern, 92, passed away peacefully June 26, 2009, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Mrs. Newbern was born in Ahoskie, N.C., on April 17, 1917. She was the daughter of the late George Patrick Perry and Maggie Nora Lee Perry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Reid Newbern; two sisters, Ellen Holloman and Lovey Perry; and four brothers, Hasty Perry, George Perry, Kelly Perry and Henry Perry. As a young girl, she grew up in Suffolk where she lived with her grandparents and aunt and worked at Planters Peanuts. She lived for a while in South Norfolk as a young woman before moving to Virginia Beach and spending the remainder of her life there. She and her husband were community leaders and ran their business at Oceana Curb Market on Virginia Beach Boulevard. She actually started a roadside stand selling fresh vegetables and fruit and it grew into a flourishing renowned stop for community shoppers and visitors on their way to vacation places at the beach locally and the Outer Banks area. She was the first to offer local delivery to Navy families at the Air Station in an old school bus. She and her husband retired from the market in 1986, but continued to be active in her church. Mrs. Newbern was active in London Bridge Baptist Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Virginia Beach for many years. Her life was highlighted by her faith in Jesus Christ and her dedication to her family. She was a loving wife, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and true friend. She is survived by her children: a daughter, Nancy Evans Miller and her husband Douglas Miller of St. Louis and a son, Julian R. Newbern Jr. and wife Kathy Newbern of Virginia Beach; four granddaughters, Jennifer Wendel, Jessica Newbern, Brooke Newbern of Virginia Beach and Shannon Killeen of St. Charles, Mo.; and two grandsons, Corky Miller of St. Louis and Alex Newbern of Virginia Beach. She is survived by six great-grandchildren, David Gilliam of Virginia Beach, Caroline Killeen and Grant Killeen of St. Charles, Mo., and Emery Miller, Bennett Miller and Keaton Miller of St. Louis; a step great-granddaughter, Audra Wendel; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., 2002 Laskin Road. A celebration of her life will be held at London Bridge Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, followed by a graveside service in Rosewood Memorial Park.
