When I was a Midshipman 3/c at the Naval Academy in the Fall of 1965, Robbie was my instructor for a course in Thermodynamics. Of the many instructors I had in my four years at USNA, I have always remembered Robbie above them all. His was the first of a very few courses in which I felt like I really knew the material, even mastered it. All credit for that goes to Robbie and his unique and inspiring talent for pushing those complex engineering principles into our often distracted brains.
I have used those principles throughout my career in naval engineering, and I have never forgotten who gave them to me.
Almost 40 years later at an Academy Alumni Association Hampton Roads Chapter Army-Navy Game party at Breezy Point, I had the honor and privilege to tell Robbie in person of the impact he had on my entire professional life. It nearly brought us both to tears.
Rest In Peace, Shipmate.
