Rachel McEwen Obituary

Rachel Smith McEwen VIRGINIA BEACH - Rachel Smith McEwen passed away peacefully at Westminster Canterbury on The Bay, her home for the last 23 years Monday, June 28, 2009. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 63 years, James Charles McEwen; her parents, Milton and Ada Smith; and her beloved sister, Yvonne Kafka. She was 89 years old. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Rachel Ann and Paul Cummings of Atlanta; grandchildren and their spouses, Paul and Julie Cummings of Brentwood, Tenn., and Sarah and Bill McCrory of Atlanta. Also surviving are four great-grandsons, Charlie, Ben, Jake and John Renwick. She also leaves many dear nieces and nephews. Rachel was born in Matoaca, Va., where she married and lived for many years. She also resided in Petersburg, Va., and in Virginia Beach for the last 35 years. Rachel worked as a dental assistant at Fort Lee, Va., during World War II, then again after staying home and raising her daughter. She was a wonderful Southern cook, an avid gardener and garden club member. She was active in PTA and other volunteer organizations. Rachel loved to travel with her husband. She enjoyed her dear S&B friends and meetings. Rachel was well thought of by many as a sweet, unpretentious lady. She was loved by the marvelous Westminster Canterbury staff and friends. The family greatly appreciates their loving, faithful care. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, July 1, at 11 a.m. in Princess Anne Memorial Park. Mr. John Deal, her nephew, will officiate. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Fund or the charity of your choice.
