Kathryn Scardina Obituary

Kathryn A. Scardina PORTSMOUTH - Kathryn Julia Antal Scardina departed peacefully at her home in Portsmouth to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 30, 2009. Kay was born Jan. 15, 1939, and was raised in Baltimore, lived in South and North Carolina and Virginia with her family. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Anthony J. "Tony" Scardina Sr., retired U.S. Marine Corps; her three dedicated children, Vicki Bibeau of Minnesota, Anthony Jr. of Portsmouth and Mike of Stafford; son-in-law, Frank and her special daughter-in-law, Wendy. Kay had four precious grandchildren, Michael II, Justine, Laura and Dominique Grace. She had one beloved sister, Linda Hedges (Wade III) of Gloucester; two brothers, Richard (Carol) and Raymond (Karen); and many nieces and nephews all who adored their Aunt Kay. She was the daughter of the late Eugene and Virginia Antal of Baltimore. Also preceding Kay was her oldest brother Bobby Antal and his wife Barbara of North Carolina. Kay was an active member of Saint Andrew Lutheran Church in Portsmouth and will be missed by her many friends in the congregation and Pastor Cathy. She volunteered with the Meals on Wheels program with her good friends. She served on the Church Council and began a sewing and quilting group. Kay spent many days at Beazley's Senior Center with her numerous projects and special friends. She was an excellent seamstress and quilter for her family and friends. Kay loved to work on ceramics throughout her life. She enjoyed making jewelry and scrapbooking was her most recent project. Kay was a fantastic hairdresser. She owned and operated a Beauty Salon in Dumfries, Va., while living with her family at Quantico Marine Corps base and on Cherry Hill Road in the home they built together. Kay was the department president of the American Legion Auxiliary, 1993-1994, for the state of Virginia and was a Past Departementaux Chapeaux for the 8 & 40 Partners of the Auxiliary. She honored her veterans by working the many programs of the American Legion Family for God and Country and always encouraged others to support our veterans. Kay and her family are grateful for the wonderful services provided by the Hospice care nurses and nurses aides through Bon Secours. Kay's family will welcome visitors at Loving Funeral Home, Academy Ave., Friday, July 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A worship memorial service will be held for Kathryn Scardina at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, High Street, Portsmouth, Saturday, July 4, at 5 p.m. with the Rev. Tony and family
I just heard about Kay. I can not express my feelings for your lost. I know that "Tony's wife" will be greatly missed by the Legion family and all who knew her.
If I can be of any service at this late date please contact me.

Linda, Melissa and Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. I know you have all been through a lot lately. But think about this; at least she isn't suffering any longer. I know how it is because I have lost family members with this disease and it is horrible. You are in my thoughts. Linda and Melissa, let me know if you need anything.

Love, Lori S. (HD Associate)
