John Barrett Obituary

John Christopher Barrett RICHMOND - John Christopher "Chris" Barrett departed this life Saturday, June 27, 2009. He passed peacefully with family members and his life partner at his bedside in his home in Richmond, Va. Chris was the son of the late William H. Barrett and EdaLane Barrett of Carrsville, Va. Chris was an exceptionally gentle and kind person and was a caring friend to all who met him. He was a devoted partner to Edmond Turner and lived and worked in Richmond for more than 20 years. Although confined to a wheel chair, he led a full life that included his work for the Virginia Commonwealth University and the Commonwealth of Virginia. He wrote extensive articles that were published in professional journals about "How to be an Effective Workplace Assistant." He loved to travel and socialize with his many friends. He also loved the beach and the Dallas Cowboys. Those that knew him best admired his intellect, wry sense of humor, spirituality, and his full acceptance of the life given to him. He will truly be missed by all. Survivors include his life partner, Edmond Turner of Richmond; a brother and sister- in-law, Anthony W. Barrett and Angelina Barrett of Fredericksburg, Va.; a sister, Manara Anne Patterson of Carrsville; nieces, Amy M. Barrett and Christi A. Fore of Charleston, S.C.; and nephews, Creighton R. Barrett of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and Barrett Patterson of Carrsville. A memorial service will be held Friday, July 3, at 2 p.m. in the Unity Church of Richmond, 800 Blanton Ave., Richmond, with the Rev. Dwight Smith and the Rev. Dr. Thelma Smith officiating. Following the memorial service, a celebration of life will be held at the home of Joseph and Jeanne Wallace, 7700 Ardendale Road, Richmond. The family requests, that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Thomas Palliative Care Unit, VCU Massey Cancer Center, Richmond, in memory of John Christopher Barrett.

To Ed and the Barrett Family

While I join you in mourning the fact that Chris is no longer here with us, I rejoice in the belief that his spirit is free, soaring and unrestrained by an earthly body. I will feel his presence in the warmth of the sun, and in the summer breeze. My memories of Chris will remind me to try to be accepting of whatever life may bring, as he did with such grace and love.
