Robert L. Blickens CHESAPEAKE - Robert Lewis "Bob" Blickens, 92, a loving husband and father, passed away Friday, July 3, 2009, in Morningside Assisted Living of Newport News following a lengthy illness. Bob was born in Carbondale, Pa., but spent most of his life in Binghamton, N.Y., moving to Virginia following retirement. Bob leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 68 years, Helen, who cared for him throughout his illness; two daughters, Carole Garrett of Portsmouth, Elise Kennett and her husband Bill of Suffolk; and one nephew, Lewis McAllister. He was predeceased by a sister, Edna, three nephews, and a granddaughter. Bob served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a gifted photographer and had the privilege of being in the company of General MacArthur. Following his military service, Bob pursued a career in the automotive industry. Bob was a lifelong Baptist and was very active in his church until his illness. He had many hobbies including building a house, restoring vintage cars, traveling and sailing. Bob touched many lives with his generous and caring deeds and never met a stranger. He never once complained during his long illness and always had a smile for everyone. The family wishes to thank Bon Secours Hospice for their kindness. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, Wednesday, July 8, from 3 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made to Bon Secours Hospice, 485 Rodman Ave., Portsmouth, VA 23707.
