Inez Green

Inez Watson Green NORFOLK - Inez Watson Green, a native and lifetime resident of Norfolk, died in her home Monday, June 29, 2009. She was 92. Mrs. Green was known by all as a great Samaritan. In addition to pursuing a successful career in social work and retiring as a Senior Social Worker for the Norfolk Division of Social Services after more than 40 years of service, she gave much of herself by way of her civic and community activities. Mrs. Green was the daughter of Henry A. Watson, a merchant, and Inez Traynham Watson, a school teacher. They named her Inez Beatrice Watson. Born in 1916, she was the eldest of the Watson's two children. As such, she began her winning way of helping others by watching over her younger brother, James A. Watson. He became a physician and practiced for most of his career in Oakland, Calif. Despite their distance, Mrs. Green and her brother remained in constant contact and close at heart. She was greatly saddened when he died in September of 2007. Mrs. Green graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk where she was an honor student. She went on to attend West Virginia State College. There she was a member of the Alpha Delta Sigma Honor Society and graduated cum laude. Thereafter, she attended Howard University School of Social Work and New York University Graduate School. After completing her education and returning home to Norfolk, Mrs. Green, despite the demands of her career, readily and generously lent a hand to others. She was an active member of Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church, member of Norfolk's Council for Interracial Cooperation, vice president of the Auxiliary to the Norfolk Medical Society, secretary to the Auxiliary of Old Dominion Medical Society, Life Member and officer of Norfolk Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., member of the Board of Management of Norfolk YWCA, board member of Virginia Council of Social Welfare and researcher for the American Cancer Society. Additionally, she was a regular volunteer for, and collected funds for, the American Heart Association and a volunteer for more than 10 years and more than 800 volunteer hours at Kirn Memorial Library. Mrs. Green was the widow of Dr. A.B. Green Jr. She is survived by her brother's widow, Mrs. Wenefrett P. Watson; nephew, Mr. James A. Watson Jr.; nephew, Dr. Henry Geoffrey Watson and his wife Mrs. Carolyn Watson; nephew, Gary A. Watson, Esq.; and niece, Mrs. Cynthia Arnold and her husband Larkin Arnold, Esq. She as well leaves great-nieces, Ms. Catherine Watson, Ms. Sara Watson and Ms. Angela Watson, and great-nephews, Mr. Bryan Watson and Mr. Richard Watson. In addition to her brother and her husband, Mrs. Green was preceded in death by her niece, Mrs. Janet Watson David; great-niece, Ms. Tiffany Dawn Washington; and great-nephew, Mr. Henry Geoffrey Watson II.
