Rochelle Lee Peebles Sr. PORTSMOUTH - Rochelle Lee "Peete" Peebles Sr., 75, of the 700 block of Palmer St., died July 1, 2009, in Kindred Hospital, Richmond, Va. Born in Emporia, Va., he retired in 1990 after 41 years of service as a mail supervisor with Norfolk Naval Shipyard where he received numerous superior performance awards. He was also the former owner and operator of Palmer's Grocery. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church, Portsmouth. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce P. Peebles; three daughters, Deborah P. Hoggard, Karen D. Frost (Carlton), Kimberly D. Peebles; six sons, Rochelle L. Peebles Jr. (Brenda), Leslie Peebles, Ronald Peebles Sr. (Karen), Keith M. Peebles (Lynnette), Kevin G. Peebles (Andrea), Wayne M. Peebles; two sisters, Jester P. Smithwick (John) and Evora P. Wingate, both of Portsmouth; two brothers, Henderson Peebles (Gloria) of New York and Hurley L. Peebles Jr. of Portsmouth; sister-in-law, Jean Griffin (Garfield); brother-in- law, Benjamin Stockton of New York; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Blanche P. Stockton (Molly); mother, Ruth Young Peebles; and father, Hurley L. Peebles Sr. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. John Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert L. Earls Sr. presiding. Burial will be held in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing will begin today at noon. The family will be at the residence. The body will be in the church Tuesday at 10 a.m. Fisher Funeral Home, 1520 Effingham St., is in charge.
