Laura Rawls Obituary

Laura Rawls VIRGINIA BEACH - Laura Darlington Holman Rawls of Virginia Beach died July 7, 2009. She was the wife of the late Robert Ashby Rawls. She was born in Brandy Station, Va., to the Rev. Jesse Knobel Holman and Ann Charles Bryant Holman. Mrs. Rawls is survived by her son, Robert A. Rawls of Washington, D.C.; her daughter, Betty Rawls Lang and her husband Fraser A. Lang of Block Island, R.I. She also leaves behind two grandsons, Ian Ashby Rawls and Brent Alexander Lang and a granddaughter, Cameron Elizabeth Walker Lang. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, San Francisco Bay chapter, and a board member of the Garden Club of Virginia. She was also a member of the Franklin and Virginia Beach Garden Clubs and Galilee Episcopal Church. Mrs. Rawls was a graduate of Mary Washington College and a longtime resident of Franklin, Va. A lover of history, Mrs. Rawls and her late husband documented the old houses of Southhampton County in the late 1940s. Their study is part of the collection of the Walter Cecil Rawls Library in Courtland. Prior to her marriage, she was a teacher at the Franklin and Courtland High Schools where she founded the business program. She was predeceased by three brothers, three sisters and a granddaughter, Margaret Randolph Lang. A memorial service and committal will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11, at the Galilee Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be directed to the charity of your choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
