Lawson P. Schools Sr. KILMARNOCK - Lawson Pearson "L.P." Schools Sr., 85, died Sunday, July 12, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Edna Coffman Schools. Mr. Schools was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Tidewater, the son of the late Lindsey Logan and Viola Mable Schools. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with an artillery unit as a cannoneer. A well-known Kilmarnock resident, he was the former owner and operator of the L.P. Schools ESSO station, a member of the Kilmarnock Police Department, serving as chief of police for nine years, and a part-time employee of the Currie Funeral Home for many years. Mr. Schools was a 22- year member of Lancaster Union Lodge No. 88 A.F. & A.M., a member of Kilmarnock Post 86 of the American Legion, Northern Neck VFW Post No. 7167, Warsaw and Northern Neck Marine Corps Association. Among his many accomplishments of community service, he was a member of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department, serving in a variety of leadership positions during his tenure and remained an active firefighter; he recently received an award for 52 years service. Through the years, he devoted many volunteer hours as a charter member of the Kilmarnock-Lancaster Rescue Squad and was presented an award for his 52 years of loyal and dedicated service in 2008. Mr. Schools was also active in the district level, holding positions as District 8 Vice President and Historian. Surviving are a son, L.P. "Nickie" Schools Jr. of DeRidder, La.; a daughter, Cynthia Schools Collins of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Fallon Nicole Schools, L.P. "Trey" Schools III, Ryan David Collins, Brenna Kathleen Collins; two great-grandchildren, Madison Marie Schools and Haiden Keith Wilson; four sisters and a brother. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Kilmarnock. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with a Masonic memorial service at 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department, P.O.
