Paul Everett Obituary

Paul Lee Everett III SUFFOLK - Paul Lee Everett III, 70, of Elk Grove, Calif., passed away June 29, 2009, after a long, courageous battle with prostate cancer. To the end he was a Southern gentleman. Lee, son of the late Julia Taylor Everett and Paul Lee Everett Jr., was born and grew up in Suffolk. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1961 and married his high school sweetheart, Betty J. Womble, that same year. After serving in the U.S. Army in Germany, Lee returned to the states with his wife and baby daughter to begin his career as a civil engineer. They moved to California, and Lee went to work for the California Department of Transportation. Then Lee and Betty were blessed with a second child, a boy. Lee retired as a senior bridge engineer in 2003 after 39 years of service with Caltrans. Mr. Everett was a member of The American Society of Civil Engineers, Professional Engineers in California Government, and Sons In Retirement El Dorado Branch No. 23. Before his health declined, Lee enjoyed backpacking and fishing. He also loved traveling and taking cruises with his wife, Betty, and his brothers and sister. A favorite destination of Lee's was Alaska. He was a loving husband and a devoted father and grandfather. When he wasn't traveling, he enjoyed spending time with his family and his two miniature dachshunds, Jack and Rascal. Survivors include his wife, Betty W. Everett of Elk Grove, Calif.; daughter, Beth E. Eller and husband Rick and their children, Andrew and Ashley of Sacramento, Calif.; son, Paul L. Everett IV of Wilton, Calif.; brother, C. Taylor Everett and wife Bekah of Waverly, Va.; sister, Elizabeth E. Gordon and husband Jim of Suffolk; and niece, Beth C. Russell of Hopewell, Va. Lee was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Kim Byers Everett and his brother, George T. Everett. Pastor Phil Oswald conducted a memorial service July 6, 2009, at East Lawn Elk Grove Mortuary Chapel. A luncheon reception followed. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society of Sacramento County, 1765 Challenge Way, Ste. 115, Sacramento, CA 95815.
