Cathryn Louise Frazier Landis

Cathryn Landis Obituary

Cathryn F. Landis HERTFORD - This is not an obituary. Obituaries are about death. Cathryn Louise Frazier Landis, "Yia Yia," is a timeless soul who will forever demand only to live, once in a body and now in the spirits of all who know her. She was born in 1934 to Joseph and Anastasia Frazier in Quantico, Va. Cathryn could always make people feel good, whether it was with a haircut at her salon, Louise's House of Beauty in Quantico, through her generous, loving and passionate spirit, or simply with a mischievous wink. She was a voracious reader who found great happiness spending time at the beach. Cathryn married Kenny Landis in 1964 and eventually relocated to North Carolina. She shared a rare, beautiful, and admirable lifelong bond with her daughter, Kleo, and grandsons, Matthew and Alex. To each, she was a best friend. Cathryn had a large circle of wonderful friends and admirers - old and young. She served tirelessly in her community as a Sunday school teacher and member of Edenton United Methodist Church and as a beautician at Edenton Prime Time Retirement Village. She possessed a remarkable will to live. For 16 years, she showed cancer who was boss. Her life was truly an expression of the grace of God. Cathryn never knew how to say no, so when the Lord came for her on July 10, 2009, she went beautifully and peacefully with Him on to the next adventure. Look out Heaven, there's a new star in town. Her family includes dog, Beau; husband, retired Gunnery Sergeant Kenneth William Landis (deceased); daughter, Kleopatra Garland and husband Jake Garland of Amherst, Va.; grandsons, Matthew Garland of Golden, Colo., Alexander and wife Cara Garland of Golden, Colo.; siblings, Elizabeth Waters, Mary Booth, Rosalie Frazier, and Diane Frazier of Quantico, Va., Peggy Stein of Cincinnati, Ohio, Rene Martina of Warren, Mich.; deceased siblings: Anna deRosia, John Frazier, Tony Frazier, William Frazier. Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at 11 a.m. in Edenton United Methodist Church. A private burial will be held in Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, Va. In lieu of flowers, please donate to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, P.O. Box 50 Memphis, TN 38101. The family would like to thank the hospital staff of Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C., Chowan Hospital in Edenton, N.C., Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, Va., and Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk along with her oncology doctors at Physicians East, Dr. H. White and Dr. Chaplinski (retired). Most importantly for all the prayers, cards, and support shown over the years. God bless you all.

So sorry to hear about Louise. I have a treasure trove of wonderful memories of Louise. We are so fortunate that God places people like Louise in our path of life, what a blessing. My sincere heartfelt sympathy to all the Frazier/Landis families. I will say farewell, Louise, but I will keep my memories. Semper Fi, from the "other" Frazier Family of Quantico Town.

Whenever I think of my early years, growing up in Quantico...over 40 years ago, I can't help but think of the Frazier family. They are synonymous with uniqueness of this little town. I worked with Tony on my first job delivering newspapers. I remember standing at the bus stop with Diane and Rene, as we braved the cold winter weather. Anna took me under her wing and shared her maturity and wisdom. The entire family impacted the way I looked at life...but Louise was "very" special. She had extraordinary people skills...and what an infectious laugh. She was kind, generous and always had a smile on her face. She was an exceptional person and will always remain in my heart. She represented what is good in the souls of people we are fortunate enough to meet in life. My sincere condolences to her wonderful family. May God smile gently upon them all.

So sorry to hear of Louise's passing. We'll always remember the good times growing up in Quantico. It seems so long-ago but still remembers like it was yesterday. Quantico was nice little town way back. Mr. & Mrs. Frazier had their restaurant and we always had to eat something while waiting on Louise. Then we would set around her shop later in years. We knew and loved the whole family. They all were part of our lives living in Quantico. Our prayers to Cleo and the sisters.

Louise was such an inspiration, role model and the best employer I'll ever have. I worked for her as a teenager in Quantico and loved every minute of it. I'll always miss her and don't know that I'll ever meet anyone like her again.

Kleo & Jake,
Are prayers are with you during this difficult time. My Happy Memory is when I visited Quantico for a week and went to Aunt Louise's shop in Quantico. She is in Heaven and out of pain and one day I will see her again.

I grew up on Louise's shop. I went there with my mom, Donna Saylor, and my Nana, Catherine Saylor, who was also friends with Louise's mom, Stussa, and my dad, Abbie, who passed away in November, grew up with the Frazier family. I last saw her when John died. I will miss her very much. The lights are much dimmer here on Earth, but they are shining very brightly in Heaven.

What a beautiful lady and wonderful friend. We had so many laughs and happy times together - some of those times Louise made me promise not to tell Kleo or Kenny about!! Last Friday I am sure our angel Louise went through the pearly gates and asked to speak to God because she has lots of questions for him and I'm sure he granted her an audience - after all no one could refuse a request from Louise- not even God. The angels are in awe of her and she has their undivided attention!! I have been very blessed to have such a wonderful friend and I know she is smiling down on all of us. Thank you Kleo and Jake for being there with her on her journey home. I miss you LOUISE-A !!!

To my second 'mamma.' Life, love and happiness are things that you brought into my life. You were always there for me through thick and thin. You are my mentor and inspiration and helped me through my recent battle with strength, humor and dignity. I will always remember your laugh and smile and cherish the time we had together. You will live forever in my heart, thoughts and prayers. It is true - there is a new kid in town - and they are in for a special treat! I will love you always. April Young Verner
