Hazel W. Whitehurst VIRGINIA BEACH - On Saturday, Aug. 1, Hazel Marie Whitehurst of Virginia Beach passed into the loving hands of God where she joined her husband, Maurice Edward "Billy" Whitehurst. She was born in Richmond, Va., and married her sweetheart of six years at age 19 before he left to serve in the U.S. Navy in 1944. They moved to Norfolk in 1945 with their young baby daughter after he returned from World War II and were together for 57 years. Virginia Beach, where they lived for 51 years, became their final home together. Hazel was an accomplished seamstress making clothes for family and friends and especially for her daughter. She shared her gift by volunteering to make costumes for school plays or activities whenever needed. She was a volunteer mom, driving students on field trips, chaperoning, supporting the PTA and never missing a school event. She was creative and enjoyed a wide range of crafts such as crocheting, upholstering, and needle working. Hazel loved many different pets over her lifetime and also the many animals and birds that visited her home. She planted a garden and kept up many flower beds every year. As a traditional homemaker, she chose to stay home, taking care of her family in every way, and creating a happy home. She was well loved during her life by her close family: her daughter, Priscilla Day and husband Douglas Day; her two granddaughters, Adrienne Day Kendrick and husband Major William August Kendrick and Jennifer Lynn Seiders and husband Jason David Seiders; her six great-grandchildren, the greatest blessings and pleasure of her life, Ted, Cameron, Ian, Erin, Dylan and Reilan. She is survived by two loving sisters, Helen Rose Bowman and Rebecca Carroll of Richmond and their families, as well as the families of her deceased brothers, Charles, Marshall, Woodrow and Elmo. She is also survived by Maurice's brothers and sisters, Pete, Alton, Annie and Margaret and their families as well as the families of his deceased brothers, Benny, Jack, and Raymond. Hazel's life will be celebrated at a graveside service Saturday, Aug. 8, at 2 p.m. in Colonial Grove Memorial Park on Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to the Virginia Beach SPCA. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be offered to the family at
