Burrell Roberts Obituary

Burrell D. Roberts WINDSOR - Burrell David Roberts, 72, died Aug. 10, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer at Southampton Memorial Hospital. Born in Isle of Wight, Va., he was the son of the late Harvey O. and Elma B. Roberts and widower of Joyce Hedgepeth Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a pipe fitter with the Newport News Shipyard and retired after 36 years of service. He was a member of Windsor Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and superintendent of the Sunday school. Mr. Roberts was an active Mason and Shriner, having been a member of the Knights of Mecca, Past Master of Purdie Masonic Lodge No. 170 AF & AM, Past District Deputy of 31st Masonic District, Portsmouth Scottish Rite Bodies, Khedive Shrine Temple, Past Captain of the Color Guard of the Khedive Shrine Temple, Past President of Suffolk Shrine Club and member of Franklin Shrine Club. Survivors include his daughter, Sarah Estelle Stradley and husband Joe of Windsor; granddaughter, Sarah Jo Stradley of Windsor. A funeral will be conducted Friday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m. in Windsor Baptist Church by the Rev. Bryan Brooks with burial in Windsor Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Khedive Shrine, Attention: Transportation Fund, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com. "I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave and echo... Whispering softly down the ways of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun of happy memories that I leave behind when life is done."

Burrell was a great Mason, Shriner and friend and he will be missed. More than likely, Burrell is Philosophying with St. Peter right now. May God Bless all of his family in their loss.
