Raphael Lowe Obituary

Raphael S. Lowe HAMPTON - Raphael S. "Ray" Lowe, 81, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009, after a long battle with asbestosis. He was born Sept. 10, 1927 in Washington County, North Carolina. He was the youngest of 11 children. Ray was a U.S. Navy veteran and retired in 1973 from NASA after 30 years of service, which included working on the Apollo and Skylab space missions. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, music and singing, especially gospel and country western, watching sports, especially baseball, traveling and celebrations with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, John W. and Allie G. Lowe and nine siblings. Ray is survived by Betty, his loving and devoted wife of 55 years; one son, Keith Lowe of Hampton; two daughters, Amy Wulf and her husband Karl of Seaford, Va., and Terri Layne-Beigel and her husband Bill of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Thomas Brady of McLean, Va., and Eva Lowe of Newport News; one great- grandchild, Laquanya Lowe; one sister, Nancy Outlaw of Ahoskie, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave., Hampton, VA 23666. A celebration of Ray's life will follow at 5 p.m. Interment with be Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. in Parklawn Memorial Park. Friends are encouraged to visit www.parklawn-woodfh.com to share memories and words of condolence with the family.

Betty and Keith and Family my name is Sandy Lowe my father was John Rowland Lowe and my Grandfather Rowland Wingate Lowe and my Dad and Raphael were very close in age but very close those two guys loved each other so much and i always get Raphael to sing me some Jim Reeves cause he always sound just like Jim Reeves i loved him dearly when i was younger i called him Uncle Raphael cause i thought him and my dad were brothers and in their love together they had for each they were and now they are together in heaven rocking together on The Glory Porch making their own sweet music together and my Mother Ruby Lowe loved old Raphael as she called him....He will be missed and i missed seeing him every Labor Day weekend singing his heart out God Bless you Betty and the family and thanks for sharing "Uncle Raf" with us God Bless to you all.
