Virginia Tarrall Obituary

Virginia B. Tarrall VIRGINIA BEACH - Virginia Barkley Tarrall died Aug. 16, 2009, at Westminster Canterbury where she resided since 2002. Mrs. Tarrall, born Sept. 5, 1918, in Wilson, N.C., to the late Annie Deans and William Thompson Barkley, was the widow of Elmer "Snookie" Tarrall. She was predeceased by her sister, Ann Barkley Ellis of Wilson. Survivors include her nieces, Gina Ellis Minton and husband Wes of Raleigh, N.C., and Mark Tarrall Haywood and husband Ray of Norfolk; her nephews, Arch C. Ellis Jr. and wife Adair of Wilmington, N.C., and Henry A. Tarrall Jr. and wife Edith of Norfolk. Mrs. Tarrall graduated from Atlantic Christian College. She married Snookie Tarrall in 1942. They settled in Snookie's native Norfolk upon his retirement from the U.S. Army and moved to Virginia Beach in 1958. Mrs. Tarrall was an active member of First Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, a founding member of Bessie Billups' King's Daughters Circle, an organizer of the Oceanside Circle and president of the YWCA of Norfolk. She was active in many community organizations and was an avid bridge player. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Westminster Canterbury's Holy Trinity Chapel. For anyone wishing to remember Virginia Tarrall in a special way, memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad. H.D.
