Sam Jones Sr.

Sam M. Jones Sr. CHESAPEAKE - Sam M. Jones Sr., 95, died Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, at Beth Sholom Home in Virginia Beach. He was born Sept. 19, 1913, in Gum Neck, N.C., to the late Charles Ashbee and Dora S. Jones. He was from the Southside Community in Columbia, N.C., and Chesapeake. He was retired from the Fifth Naval District Printing and Publications Office. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Melba Grace Jones; his sister, Elsie Rae Spencer; brother, Claud Jones and daughter-in-law, Talli Jones. He is survived by his loving wife, Alethia "Lee" Etheridge Jones; sons, S. Marvin Jones Jr. and wife Nancy, Charles L. Jones; daughter, M. Cheryl Jones; and stepdaughter, Angie Brickhouse. He is also survived by his grandsons, Sam M. Jones III and C. Tom Jones and wife Nancie Carol; grandchildren, Mattie Grace, Samantha, Abby, Dorian and Noah Jones; as well as sisters, Lillie Mae Cahoon, Erline Kemp, Kathleen Spencer and husband Billy; brothers, Josh Jones and wife Barbara, Larry Jones and wife Phyllis; and sisters-in-law, Mary Jenkins, Pecolia Ayres and Iris Jones. Sam's greatest joy was spending time with his large and loving family including his many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to give special thanks to his niece, Gay Riddick and husband Edward for all of their love and care during his final illness. Thanks also to the staff at Beth Sholom Rehab Center who gave him such tender care. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug. 30, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Oaklette United Methodist Church, Indian River Road. Interment will follow in Riverside Memorial Park, Indian River Road.
