James Whitley Obituary

James N. Whitley Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - James N. Whitley Jr., 82, formerly of Virginia Beach, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009, at Wesley Glen Retirement Community in Columbus, Ohio, after a brave battle with Alzheimer's disease. He grew up in the Ocean View area and attended Granby High School. He served in the U.S. Navy 1945-1946, worked for Piedmont Airlines in the 1940s, and retired from Naval Station Norfolk as a crash crew firefighter. Jim was born to the late James N. Whitley Sr. and Naomi Evans Whitley. He is survived by his loving companion, Doris Moore, formerly of Virginia Beach, who resided with him at Wesley Glen; one daughter, Anne Whitley (Rick) Lawrence, Anne's mother, Patricia Andrews; and two grandsons, Wesley and Maxwell Arnold, all of Virginia Beach; Doris' daughters, Jeri (David) Dill of Lewis Center, Ohio, and Mickey Moore and her two children, Marcus and Melody Moore of Norfolk; and one cousin, Sheila Evans of Virginia Beach. Private burial will be at a later date in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. Arrangements are through Weir-Arend Funeral Home of Columbus, Ohio, 614-268-3593. In Jim's memory, contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, the American Heart Association, or a favorite animal rescue or shelter.
