Jerome Carr Obituary

Jerome P. Carr II PORTSMOUTH - Jerome P. Carr II, 97, passed away Sept. 6, 2009, in his home. He was a kind, gentle, fair, honest, loving father, grandfather, and person. Jerome was a native of Portsmouth. He received his AB from The College of William & Mary in 1931. He was Phi Beta Kappa and won the Carr Memorial Cup, awarded annually. He went on to receive his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1934. He was an attorney with the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice from 1934 to 1939 and in private practice in Charleston, W.Va., from 1939 to 1943. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943-1946, receiving French language training at the University of Minnesota and then serving in Paris as an Army criminal investigator in liaison with the French police. He had several letters to the editor published in The Virginian-Pilot and several papers published in the quarterly publication of "The Torch." He was president of the Portsmouth Bar Association during some of his years of practice in Portsmouth. He retired from private practice in Portsmouth. Survivors include his daughter, Teresa C. Foster; son, Thomas P. Carr; brother, Albert J. Carr and wife Leola; granddaughter, Tammy L. Yates and her two children: Christopher and Jessica; grandson, William M. Strickland and wife Tracy and their two children: Jordan and Jenna; several nieces and nephews. Jerome was preceded in death by his wife, Caroline. There will be no service at this time. Jerome was a contributor to WHRO for many years. If anyone would like to make a contribution in his memory, please make a donation to WHRO public television or WHRO public radio. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.
