Walter Kindred Obituary

Walter Milton Kindred VIRGINIA BEACH - Dr. Walter Milton "Skip" Kindred, 82, passed away Sept. 8, 2009. He was born in Norfolk to the late Robert and Kate Kindred. He was a student at Booker T. Washington High School. Community service beckoned, and he enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country during the closing days of World War II. He returned home to continue his education at Norfolk State College (now University) and Virginia State College (now University). He continued his studies at Howard University, receiving his D.D.S. degree in 1961. In 1962, he opened his own dental practice, and thus began a long-term passion for dentistry that led to leadership roles within the local and national dental associations. To add continuity to his life, he was a lifetime member of the Fountainhead Club. To further community, he supported the 200+ Men Inc. To enhance commerce, he was a founding member of the Greater Norfolk Development Company. To add dimension, he had the Guardsmen. To encompass his spirituality, he belonged to Grace Episcopal Church. To relax and unwind, there was always golf. He gave generously, he traveled widely, he played robustly, he worked passionately, he believed deeply. He lived life his way. He was predeceased by Elsie Doyle Kindred, his wife of 56 years, and his sister, Irene Hatchett. He is survived by his brother, Robert Kindred and his wife Greta of Chesapeake; three sons, Michael Williams and his wife Janie of Charlotte, N.C., Walter Kindred Jr. and his wife Klinette of Springfield, Va., and Erick Kindred of Virginia Beach; two nieces, Wanda Church of Chesapeake and Kay Kindred of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. There will be a memorial service at Grace Episcopal Church Saturday, Sept. 12, at noon. Interment will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Cemetery, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, VA 23434, on Monday, Sept. 14, at noon. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Grace Epsicopal Church, 1400 East Brambleton Ave., Norfolk, VA 23504, (757) 625-2868.

I send my deepest condolences to the Kindred family. I was one of Dr Kindred's first patients and continued with him until he retired. He showed a true compassion for his work. I truly missed his awesome skills.

To The Kindred Family:
Please accept my condolences on the passing your loved one. "Skip" as I grew to know him was a family friend of Dennis and Johnann Perry and was there for us when daddy passed. My memories of Skip are many, the fondest was the sparkle in his eyes when he saw us, the kids, grow into men. He took so much pride in our success. I'll miss him.
