Jacquie Deans Obituary

Jacquie McCready Deans PORTSMOUTH - Jacquie Bland McCready Deans, 85, passed away at home Monday, Sept. 14, 2009. Born Aug. 8, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Wolga Bland and Wilhelmina R. "Billie" Bland Johnson, and the widow of Harry G. McCready. She fought a long and courageous battle yet passed away comfortably and peacefully with her devoted husband, Horace L. Deans, by her side. Educated in Portsmouth Public Schools, Jacquie graduated from Churchland High School, Bouvé (Boston), and Tufts University where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. Early in her teaching career she was the physical education director at Foxcroft School for Girls in Middleburg, Va. She also taught in Rochester, N.Y., and in Portsmouth at Woodrow Wilson High School. Jacquie was an active member of her church and community, serving on numerous committees and boards: Portsmouth Parks and Recreation Commission, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, local and state garden clubs, Girls Club of Portsmouth, Portsmouth Service League (lifelong member), Harry Hunt Junior High School PTA, Portsmouth General Hospital Auxiliary, Portsmouth Junior Women's Club, and Trinity Episcopal Church. Jacquie was an avid golfer and member of the USGA and Virginia State Golf Association. She won championships at local and state golf courses and was credited with three "hole in ones." Jacquie enjoyed her bridge clubs tremendously and lived a full, joyous life filled with kindness, concern and compassion. She knew no economic, social or color barriers. Most importantly, she was a devoted wife to both Harry and Horace. Jacquie is survived by her loving husband, Horace Lorenzo Deans; Barbara "Bobbie" McCready Stone Parrish; Parke L. Deans; Virginia Deans Richardson; Susan D.R. Morgan and their families; dearest friends, Anne and Bryant Barnes; several cousins and countless friends. A special note of thanks goes to Edna Addison and Henry Hamilton who faithfully and tirelessly cared for Jacquie for many years. Sincere gratitude is extended to "Hospice" for quality assistance. A private graveside service will be held. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, in Trinity Episcopal Church, Portsmouth. A reception will follow in the parrish hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or to a charity of one's choice. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.

I was so sorry to her that Jacquie is gone. My cousin, Bob Randolph, called and told me this morning. I fondly remember Jacquie and Harry and lots of Glenshellah childhood memories of them. I especially remember Jacquie's Christmas tree with the "It's a Wonderful Life-like" panorama under it, how Harry always had the newest gadgets and games, and all their dogs through the years. Glenshellah was an idyllic place.

Much Love!
