Sylvia Zucker Obituary

Sylvia Feldman Zucker VIRGINIA BEACH - Sylvia Feldman Zucker passed away Monday, Sept. 28, 2009, at Beth Sholom Home of Eastern Virginia. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 2, 1917 to the late Sarah and Sam Feldman. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Max and her two brothers, Andy Farrell and Sidney Feldman. Mrs. Zucker's life work was guided by her desire to expose special children to learning and working situations to develop each individual to its fullest potential. In 1961, she was hired as executive director of the Peninsula Association for Retarded Citizens. She began with a fundraising Hope Fund of 16 cents from her own pocket. With hard work, state and federal grants and civic groups and private donations she built the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Regional Center. Through her acquaintance with the family of Chester Carlson, inventor of Xerox, she raised the funds to begin construction of the facility which housed a preschool, vocational center, residential cottages and summer camp. This campus was a memorial dedicated to Mrs. Doriss Carlson's mother, Sarah Bonwell Hudgins. In addition, Mrs. Zucker was fortunate to have board members who were dedicated and supported her every endeavor. Upon her retirement in 1978, the Administration Building was named in her honor. Mrs. Zucker is survived by a daughter, Pearl Taylor and her husband Richard and a son, Roy Zucker; four grandchildren, Shawn Taylor Zelman and her husband Jeff, Stephanie Lichty and her husband Jeff, Jason and Lauren Zucker; seven great- grandchildren, Jay, Abby, Molly and Joshua Lichty and Taylor, Sawyer and Skylar Zelman. The funeral will be Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Chevra Thilim Cemetery on George Washington Highway and Frederick Boulevard officiated by Rabbi Michael Panitz. The family will have the Meal of Consolation at the home of Stephanie and Jeff Lichty, 2537 Nestlebrook Trail, Virginia Beach. Shiva will be observed at the home of Pearl and Richard Taylor, 2834 Loveliness Court, Virginia Beach, Wednesday evening, Thursday and Friday. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Foundation, 1 Singleton Drive, Hampton, VA 23666 or Temple Israel, 7255 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23505. Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.altmeyer.com.

Dear Pearl & Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Mrs. Zucker was my mentor in several ways. I regret not having been in touch with her for the last several years. She was a strong minded person who would take "no" for an answer from anyone - "The Iron Hand."

I loved working for her in the 70's & 80's, and enjoyed the many years of friendship we shared.

My deepest sympathy to all of her family,

Dear Pearl,

It's been so many years since we have seen each other, but I remember your family as one of the first my parents met in Portsmouth 50 years ago. Your mother was a wonderful person and a good friend to my parents. I'm sure that she will be sorely missed by many.
Love to you all!

To Richard and Pearl
I feel very hornored to have known your mother for over thirty years. She took my Little Sister under her wing and made her a very happy and productive person with a pay check.
Thank both of you for allowing us to share your mother.
Happy memories

Dear Pearl and famly,

We were deeply saddened to hear to of the loss of your mother. When we lose someone we love, it seems that time stands still.

Pearl, we have been friends for over 50 years. We will cherish the memories of the times we spent together. I will always remember the times that we spent with you and your family each Rosh Hashana at your home together with the BIG 3 – Ms. Zuck, Ms. Taylor and Ms. Nellie – to celebrate the New Year. I especially enjoyed helping to serve them the food and to watch our moms conversing with each other. Unfortunately, now the BIG 3 are gone (may they rest in peace), but the memories will always be there. I will miss them very much.

May the peace which comes from the memories of love shared, comfort you now and in the days ahead.

We are with you during this time of grief. Our thoughts are prayers are with you.

Audrey, Anita and Raymond also express their sincere condolences.

We will always be here for you.

Love,

Henry Gottlieb & Audrey Pashko;

To the family of Ms. Zucker...she and dad served many years on the Board of Directors at Sarah Bonwell. She was dedicated and cared about each child that was there. She was a driving force behind many projects and raised awareness here on the peninsula about people with special needs. Our heart goes to out to the family. We trust that God's love will enfold you now and in the future. Ms. Zucker will be missed by many. God Bless you all.
