Ruth Harwood Obituary

Ruth Harwood VIRGINIA BEACH - Ruth Harwood passed away Sept. 26, 2009, in Virginia Beach. She was born in New York City and lived there most of her life before relocating to Virginia Beach in 2000. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Mollie Rothenberg; her adored husband, Ted; her baby son, Jeffrey; and her baby sister, Beatrice. She is survived by her sister, Pearl and husband Nat Rubin of New York; her sons, Andy and his wife Wendy of Los Angeles and Steve and his wife Susan of Virginia Beach; and grandchildren, Adam, Amanda and Elissa. She was a bright, fun-loving woman who enjoyed the theatre, traveling, dancing, playing cards (a passion inherited by some family members), and socializing with friends and family. Facile with words and good with numbers, she worked as a bookkeeper for many years. Enjoying baseball was something she inherited from her father and that enjoyment was absorbed by her sons and grandchildren. Her extended family consisted of childhood and school friends with whom she was close throughout her life. She was a lifetime member of Hadassah, active in the Bellerose Jewish Center in New York, and very proud of her recent B'nai Mitzvah at the Beth Sholom Village. Reading was her passion and she could always direct you to a good book. A graveside ceremony was held Tuesday, Sept. 29, in New York. Minyan services will be held at Steve and Susan Harwood's residence today and Thursday at 7 p.m. The family sends heartfelt appreciation to the residents and staff at The Beth Sholom Village who provided wonderful support and companionship to her and especially to her caregivers, Josette Coleman and Toni Clark. Memorial donations may be made to Beth Sholom Home or Temple Emanuel, Virginia Beach.
