Carlton Layden

Carlton P. Layden SUFFOLK - Carlton Phillip Layden, 83, of the 4500 block of Deer Forest Road, died Monday, Oct. 12, 2009, in Sentara Obici Hospital. Mr. Layden was born in Perquimans County, North Carolina, and was the son of the late Archie Elfred and Beatrice Copeland Layden. Retired after 35 years with Coca-Cola in Suffolk, he was a member and deacon of Eureka Baptist Church, its Adult Men's Sunday School Class, and served as the director of Sunday school for 13 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, J. Oliver Layden Sr. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Joyce Riddick Layden; a daughter, Sandra L. DeAngelo and husband Gary of Queensbury, N.Y.; two sons, Phil Layden of Corapeake, N.C., and Reginald Layden and wife Terri of Williamsburg; six sisters, Adelaide Hendrix and Doris Monds, both of Tyner, N.C., Helen Riddick of Portsmouth, Clemma Bunch of Belvidere, N.C., Sylvia Miller of Hertford, N.C., and Marlene Bass of Hobbsville, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jonathan Layden, Jennifer Harry and husband Corky, Christy Fitzwater and husband Gilbert, Andy Layden and wife Emily, and Matthew Powell; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jackson, and Ryleigh Harry and Grayson Fitzwater. A funeral will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Eureka Baptist Church by the Rev. Mickey Willard. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, N.C., and all other times at the residence.
