Gordon Smith Obituary

Gordon Smith Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Gordon W. "Smitty" Smith Sr., 83, peacefully closed his eyes Oct. 13, 2009, on his earthly life and entered into eternal life with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born May 6, 1926, in Antigo, Wis. to Jack and Mae Smith. He served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. There was a special calmness about Smitty - a magnetism that drew people to him; he never met a stranger. He was a faithful and honorable man: he loved life, his family and his friends. Smitty's Christian faith was paramount in his life. He was an executive with the POMOCO Automotive Group for more than 40 years on the Peninsula and was active in many community organizations and a loyal member of the Gideon Ministry. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of more than 50 years, Barbara J. Smith of Virginia Beach; son, Gordon W. Smith Jr. and wife Sandy of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter, Glennell Leanord and husband Charles of New Freedom, Pa.; two grandchildren, Zachary and Taylor Leanord; mother-in-law, Sarah Boyd of Virginia Beach; brother, Robert J. Smith and wife Rose of Winter Haven, Fla.; sister, Althea McNamara of Wisconsin; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, John J. Smith. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Grace Bible Church, 2961 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach. The family requests memorial donations be made in Gordon's name to the Gideons International Peninsula North Camp, P.O. Box 6373, Newport News, VA 23606. Barbra,

Smitty was a special person. From the moment I met him I knew something was different about him. He just had that presence that makes you feel at ease and welcome. He is with our Lord now, and I can see him as maybe a greeter, welcoming the newly passed into our Lords kingdom. Our prayers are with you for your comfort and understanding. We will see you as soon as we get back.

Ms. Barbara and family, I am sorry I missed Smittys service. My grand mother was rushed back to Riverside on Saturday morning. Please know I was thinking about ya'll. Smitty was a great mentor to me. Teaching me patience and perserverance. He was so easy to talk with and more importantly to listen to as he was sharing some of lifes lessons. Not seen you guys much on the last several yrs but know you were always in my thougts!

I love you! You and Smitty have both been on my heart and in my prayers alot lately. I heard the sad news today. Let me know if there is any way I can help you. Smitty touched my life in many ways he didn't even realize. He is a great man and a beautiful display of what a father should be. You are a precious friend and I thank God for you! Dear Aunt Barb
We were so sad to hear about Uncle Gord. My greatest regret was the distance between us which made our time together so limited. I have such great memories of him as a young girl and will hold on to them always. It was
so exciting when he came to visit and he would bring a convertible and then when I was 16 he let me drive it. I thought I was so cool. We all loved him
very much as we do you. You, Gordon &
Glennell are in our thoughts & prayers.
I know he will be greatly missed.
Love your Hanus Family

I am so sorry to hear of your father's passing. It's been a number of years since those Northside Christian School days we spent together and I remember your father being so personable and fun to be around when I would visit your home. Know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
