Hurley Moncus Obituary

Hurley Moncus WINDSOR - Hurley Moncus, 76, died Oct. 14, 2009, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Alabama, he was the son of the late Paul and Zonie M. Moncus. He retired from the Air Force and had owned and operated Economy Upholstery. He was a member of Windsor Baptist Church. Music was a great part of his life and he and his wife were known for their gospel singing. Hurley was also a fiddle player, playing with many musicians in the Tidewater area, and at the age of 22 was the World Champion Fiddle Player. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn J. Moncus; sisters, Ruby Richardson and Maxine Thompson, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; and brother, Benny Moncus of Tennessee. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Windsor Baptist Church by the Rev. Bryan Brooks and the Rev. Dr. Donald Rhoton. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Aunt Carol,God needed a Fiddle player so he looked down upon the earth and promoted Uncle Hurley to join his Heavenly Choir and band, he placed a goldern fiddle into Hurley's hands. Although he will be missed here on Earth, we celebrate his homegoing to be with JESUS. We love you Aunt Carol our prayers are with you. Tony & Linda Garcia

Mrs Carol, I am very sorry to hear about Mr. Hurley. I will miss playing with him on saturday nights at Paul Campbell's. Hurley has taught me alot of licks and neat tricks on the fiddle. We have a saying in the family, they have not gone just gone ahead to make way for us.
