Theodore Spivey Obituary

Theodore C. Spivey Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Theodore C. "Ted" Spivey of the 3000 block of Caterpillar Court died peacefully Nov. 27, 2009, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Born Aug. 25, 1932, in Norfolk, Mr. Spivey lived in South Norfolk for the first 27 years of his life. He was a graduate of South Norfolk High School and The College of William and Mary/ VPI Technical Institute in Norfolk, where he studied radio and television broadcast engineering. He later attended Elon College in Burlington, N.C., and was a broadcast engineer for radio stations in Greensboro, N.C., and for radio and television stations in the Tidewater area. He commenced his civil service career in 1964 and retired in 1993 from the Commander Naval Air Force Atlantic staff in Norfolk, where he served as a supervisory equipment specialist in the aviation support equipment and Maintenance Facilities Branch. He received several awards during his career. Shortly after his retirement, he was designated as Honorary Aerospace Maintenance Duty Officer by the Naval Air Systems Command in Washington, D.C. At that time, only two other civilians had ever been selected to receive that honor. He cherished this award above all others. Prior to serving on the COMNAVAIRLANT Staff, he served in the production engineering department at the Naval Air Rework Facility, Norfolk, for 13 years. He served the Navy for a total of 29 years. He was also an avid amateur radio operator and enjoyed the hobby very much. As K4QLO, he conversed with other amateur radio operators on every continent, in every state in the United States and in numerous countries around the world. Quite often, he would provide radio interface between deployed military personnel and their families at home in the United States. He was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach. He is survived by his devoted, loving wife, Lenore Brown Spivey; two sons, Kevin Lee Spivey and William Alan Spivey; and one granddaughter, Megan Ann Spivey, all of Chesapeake. He has one sister, Joanne S. Duncan and husband Joseph of Virginia Beach. He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore C. Spivey Sr. and Mildred B. Spivey of Chesapeake. A celebration of Mr. Spivey's life will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to your church or a charity of choice. Friends may offer condolences at www.mem. com.
