Mary Tyler Obituary

Mary Sallé Tyler VIRGINIA BEACH - Mary Sallé Tyler, the wife of Fielding Lewis Tyler, died Nov. 27, 2009. Mary was the daughter of Grace Addison Sallé and Julian Anderson Sallé of Richmond. She was born in Richmond Nov. 24, 1933 and moved to Virginia Beach when she was 3-years-old. She often told stories of growing up at the North End of the beach. She was a graduate of The Graham School and Miss Bethea's School of Business in Norfolk. Among her first jobs, she was assistant society editor for The Virginian- Pilot working with Frances Stansbury. Mary was a former member of the Junior League of Norfolk/Virginia Beach and Augusta, Ga., the Junior Virginia Beach Garden Club and the Princess Anne Country Club. During her 30 years as an Army spouse, she faithfully served in a number of executive positions in Officers Wives Clubs in the United States, Puerto Rico and Germany. She devoted countless hours in a variety of volunteer work including the Navy Relief and the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad. Mary effectively served as treasurer of the North Virginia Beach Civic League for 11 years. She was also a member of the Back Bay Restoration Foundation. Mary was generous with donations to a number of her favorite charities. She had numerous hobbies including gardening, furniture refinishing and reading. Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Fielding Lewis Tyler; her daughters, Elisabeth Tyler Mathis and her husband Perry Alexander Mathis of Phoenix, Ariz., Courtenay Tyler Vass and her husband Larry Joseph Vass Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; and her grandchildren, Whitney Blake and Austin Tyler Vass, Avery Lockwood and Allison Sallé Mathis. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Sallé Ross and husband William Ross of Richmond; her brothers, James Addison Sallé and wife Peggy of Richmond, Steven Brice Sallé and wife Ginger of Atlanta and Charles Merryman Sallé and wife Mickey of Virginia Beach; many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Christopher Thompson, rector of Eastern Shore Chapel. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Old Coast Guard Station, P.O. Box 1035, Virginia Beach, Virginia, VA 23451 or the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, 740 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
