Sheryn Milton Obituary

Sheryn F. Milton VIRGINIA BEACH - Sheryn Elizabeth Davis Faucette Milton, 62, went to be with the Lord Nov. 29, 2009, and is now celebrating eternal life after living victoriously for a decade with advanced cancer. Born in Charlotte, N.C., July 4, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Jean Davis of Charlotte. She attended East Mecklenburg High School, graduated from James Madison University, and received her master's from Old Dominion University. She retired as director of Disability Services at ODU where she used her unique gifts to counsel and support hundreds of students to realize their academic and personal potential. She was an active and longtime member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, serving in numerous leadership roles and becoming an integral part of the fabric and spirit of the church - her spiritual home. Sheryn will be remembered for her servant heart, love of life, unmatched hospitality, nurturing spirit, grace, wisdom, laughter, resilience, expert desserts, and most of all, deep, unwavering faith. She was a committed servant of Christ who considered every interaction and decision as part of her life's mission to draw others closer to God. She was a devoted and adored mother and grandmother while extending her love beyond her family to her students, colleagues, neighbors and friends. As she often reminded her children, it's all about love. Celebrating her memory include her son, Christopher Faucette of Lansing, Mich.; daughters, Allison Dunn (Mark) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Sarah Wildey (Mike) of Wyoming, Mich. Grandchildren Joshua Dunn and Katherine Wildey will forever delight in the memory and legacy of their Lulu. She is also remembered by her brother, Buck Davis (Linda) and sister, Jennifer McKellop (Mike) of Charlotte; former husbands Sidney Faucette of Rockford, Mich., and George Milton of Virginia Beach; many beloved aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews. Sheryn's life song remains for all who knew her: Rejoice Always! A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 1, at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church with a viewing a half hour prior to the service. A reception will be held in the church immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 2, in Forest Lawn West Cemetery in Charlotte. A reception will be held immediately following at Forest Lawn West Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to VBUMC. Rosewood- Kellum Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Ms. Sheryn will always be remembered in my heart. She was truly an inspiration to the students, at ODU, that had the priviledge of knowing her. She and I had a relationship of student and advisor thru ODU's Disability Services and the relationship grew outside of ODU after my graduation. She was a wonderful person to know and love!

Sheryn was my advisor until she left ODU last year. Being a student returning to college after 25 years, I had much self-doubt and uncertainty about my abilities. Without Sheryn's constant encouragement and support, I would not be preparing to graduate in the Spring. She will always hold a place in my heart. Thank you, Sheryn.

I've only had the priveledge of getting to know Sheryn for a short period of time, but long enough to be blessed and inspired by her. Your true beauty and grace will be missed but will live on through the many lives you have touched.

My thoughts, love and prayers go out to the family. May you find comfort, peace and joy knowing that she is in heaven and that we shall all be together again someday.

I remember one day Ms. Milton came into my office at ODU and she stopped instantly and exclaimed that she felt the presence of God in my office. Little did she know that I had just finished praying and anointing my office. Her faith in God was refreshing. Her sweet spirit and love for the Lord was sincere. Thank you Sheryn. You are with our heavenly father now. No pain, just joy, love and peace!

God bless this family and may they find comfort in knowing that she is definitely with our Lord. Sincerely, Cynthia Williams, Old Dominion University

Sheryn was one of the most inspirational Christians I have ever known. Despite personal sadness, physical pain, and family emergencies, she maintained an exemplary faith. I pray that her children feel the strength that the Holy Spirit breathed into their mom in their loss.

My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time of grief. I had the honor of working with Sharon @ ODU and was often amazed and encouraged by her strength, and wisdom. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of your cherished times together and a life well lived.

Warmly,
Karen Travis
