Alice Spangler Obituary

Alice T. Spangler NORFOLK - Alice T. Spangler, 89, beloved wife, mother, sister and daughter, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Spangler Sayles and Clifford S. Sayles Jr., following a long illness. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Earl Spangler, and is survived by daughters, Margaret Spangler Sayles and Elizabeth Spangler and sons-in-law Clifford S. Sayles Jr. and Robert Macgregor; two grandchildren; other special family members and exceptional friends. Born and raised in Falkirk, Scotland, she was the daughter of Andrew and Isabella Nicol, and the sister of four siblings who preceded her in death. She was a graduate of Falkirk High School where she received numerous academic honors and was head perfect, and also received advanced degrees and honors from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and the University of Maryland in College Park, Md. Mrs. Spangler served as a civil servant for the Ministry of Fuel and Power in London, England during World War II where she met her future husband, Earl Spangler who was a serviceman stationed in London with the Dept. of the Army 660th Engineers. After the war she immigrated to the United States where she married Mr. Spangler, raised her family, became a U.S. citizen, furthered her education and pursued a lengthy, productive and rewarding career as a librarian with Montgomery County government as a library administrator and librarian at Bethesda library in Bethesda Maryland. Mrs. Spangler was admired and respected professionally and personally by those who knew her and embraced the tenets of compassion, grace and dignity throughout all aspects of her life. Mrs. Spangler was devoted to her husband and family and public service, and enjoyed gardening and traveling with her husband and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, on Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. and a graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
