Angel Morales Obituary

Angel L. Morales VIRGINIA BEACH - Lt. Col. Angel L. Morales, 74, died peacefully Dec. 1, 2009, with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife, Maria Paz; daughters, Nancy and her husband Alan, Angela and her husband Christopher; and his six grandchildren, Edgar, Genesys, Alanna, Esteban, Shannon and Ethan. Born, raised and educated in Puerto Rico, he was a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. He began his military career in Puerto Rico at the age of 18 and retired after 30 years of distinguished service. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and during his time there he established an orphanage for war orphans in Qui Non, South Vietnam. He received the Vietnamese Medal of Honor, Joint Services Meritorious Service Award and the Army Commendation Medal. In the early 1970s, he was assigned to the Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group in Madrid, Spain, where he met his wife, Maria Paz. After retirement, he lived two years in Madrid, Spain, with his family and then moved to Virginia Beach where he lived for the last 23 years. During his time in Hampton Roads, he dedicated himself to the Hispanic and multicultural communities. He also served the City of Virginia Beach as a member of several committees, commissions and organizations and was a huge supporter of the arts and humanities. Among these are the Hispanic Radio Program, Peace and Justice Committee for the Diocese of Richmond, Virginia Beach Census Committee, Virginia Beach Fellowship Committee, Virginia Beach Human Rights Commission, the Multicultural Alliance of Virginia, Virginia Beach Arts & Humanities Commission, Virginia Beach Rotary Club, Virginia Beach Sister Cities Commission, Organizer for the first Spanish-speaking Alcoholics Anonymous group in Hampton Roads, Global Cultures, Interés Hispano, Greater Hampton Roads World Affairs Council and the Diversity Taskforce of the Virginia Beach Public School system. A funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held Saturday, Dec. 5., at 12:30 p.m. at Catholic Church of the Holy Family by Father Joseph Slattery. The family will receive friends at the Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. I remember all the wonderful things Mr. Morales did for the multicultural community. In the early days we were all scattered and "alone." He worked on drawing us all together. For that I will always be grateful.
Later on he came out and supported "The Pan Project" even when there was nothing much in it for him.

Querida Mari Paz y familia, esto ha sido un golpe duro para mi, ya que no estaba al corriente de su enfermedad!
Espero que los anos que habeis compartido juntos os sirvan de eterno recuerdo y compania!
