Roy Merrell Obituary

Roy E. Merrell Sr. CURRITUCK - Roy Edward Merrell Sr., 94, of the 5900 block of Caratoke Highway died Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Merrell, a native of Currituck County, was the son of the late Isaac Holly Merrell and Paulina Woodhouse Merrell and the widower of Hilda Bryant Merrell. He was a retired welder from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II having served in the Philippines, and a member of Poplar Branch Baptist Church. Mr. Merrell was an avid sportsman, especially duck and goose hunting on Currituck Sound. Mr. Merrell is survived by a daughter, Sandra Merrell Kaylor and husband Robert S. of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, R. Edward Merrell Jr. and wife Linda of Cibolo, Texas, and Randy Lee Merrell and wife Mary Beth of Elizabeth City, N.C.; three sisters, Marie Henderson, Mary Franssen and Lessie Pugh; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be Monday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. in Twiford's Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Bill Thorn officiating. Burial will follow in West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Military honors will be rendered by the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post No. 6060. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence of the son, Mr. and Mrs. Randy Merrell, 2512 Dan and Mary St., Elizabeth City.
