Elizabeth Hughes Obituary

Elizabeth Hope Hughes VIRGINIA BEACH - Elizabeth Hope Hughes, 79, of the 4300 block of N. Witchduck Road, passed from this life on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009 surrounded by her loving family. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 58 years, Roy J. Hughes Sr. She is survived by their children, Roy J. Hughes Jr., his wife Patricia and their child Melissa G. Marchese of Virginia Beach, Care E. Hughes of Virginia Beach, Patrick M. Hughes and his wife Judy of Norfolk, and James S. Hughes his wife Margarita and their children Jamie E. Hughes and James R. Hughes of Virginia Beach. Mrs. Hughes (Betty to all who knew her) was born in Springfield, Mass., and it was in Boston that she met her future husband while they were both attending art school. Following her graduation, Betty worked as a fashion designer in the art department of various Boston newspapers. Betty and Roy were married Sept. 8, 1951 in Springfield, Mass. As the wife of a career naval husband, she and their children called many ports their home and no matter where they were, Betty always made each location a loving home. After more than 20 years of travel to many duty stations in the United States and a 3-year tour in France, the family settled first in Norfolk and then later in Virginia Beach where they have called home now for more than 30 years. Betty spent a good part of her time as a caregiver to others and as a volunteer at area hospitals and is fondly remembered for her service as a member of the Lady Volunteers of Sentara Bayside hospital. Betty was many things to many people, but the role she cherished most in life was that of a mom. No one who ever crossed her doorstep was a stranger and she welcomed them all with open arms making them instant friends and family. And as everyone knows, when your picture made it to the kitchen wall, you were family for life. A large and extended family that never once had to doubt how much this exceptional mom loved them will remember Betty affectionately. Family will receive guests at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, 1457 Independence Blvd., today, Dec. 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. A funeral will be held in the funeral home chapel Saturday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m. with a graveside ceremony to follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, 6309 East Virginia Beach Blvd. In addition to flowers, charitable contributions may be made in Betty's memory to the American Cancer Society. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com.
