James Barker Obituary

James N. Barker Jr. NORFOLK - James Norwood Barker Jr., 86, of the 5300 block of Orion Ave., went to be with the Lord Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009. Born in Norfolk, to the late Lottie M. Hobbs and James N. Barker Sr., James had worked for the Naval Air Rework Facility for 36 years as a management analyst. He was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Norfolk, American Legion Post 204, and a lifetime member of Elks Lodge 38. He was a U.S. Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Marie C. Barker; a daughter, Linda B. Roberson of Norfolk; granddaughter, Susan M. Polomsky and husband Reed of Acworth, Ga.; two great- grandchildren, Ryan M. Polomsky and Taylor S. Polomsky; a brother-in-law, William Couch; and loving niece, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by a grandson, Scott J. Roberson. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Reginald Burgess officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 5767 Sellger Drive, Norfolk, VA 23502. I will miss you, and the times you and the back table came in. Jim, you and Marie were quite a crew, funny when the moment called for it. Guess what, we both worked at the NARF for a while too. You were there for 36 yrs. and I worked there too, for 10 years (1986-1996). Now we are Elks (together) and we miss you.
Well now you are looking down at us and smiling.

I first met Jim when I joined the Norfolk Elks Lodge in 1999 (although probably earlier than that since my Dad was a member of American Legion Post 204 as well). He always had a kind word and a hardy handshake for his fellow members. I remember thinking, "...he looks just like James Whitmore from the movie Shawshank Redemtion..."! I even mentioned that to him one time, and he just looked at me and chuckled.
May God bless and keep you Jim; your smile will be sorely missed at Lodge #38!!
