Thomas Sciance Obituary

Thomas W. Sciance NORFOLK - Thomas Warner "Tom" Sciance, 45, of Old Ocean View Road, passed away at home Dec. 11, 2009. Born in Norman, Okla., he moved several times with his family, living at various times in Texas, France and Delaware. He graduated from Brandywine High School in 1982 and attended Washington University at St. Louis. From there he took a job in Wilmington, Del., as an EMT before joining the United States Navy. He retired as a nuclear machinist mate first class after 20 years of service in 2007. From there he returned to Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a physical science technician, where he worked until his death. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of First Class, as well as the American Legion, the Brain Injury Association of Virginia, and the National Registration of Radiological Professionals and Technicians. Tom is survived by his wife, Karen L. Sciance; daughter, Bronwyn Sciance of Norfolk; son, Jonathan Sciance of Norfolk; his parents, C. Thomas and Anita R. Sciance of Austin, Texas; two brothers, Steven and Fred Sciance, both of Troy, Mich.; and four nephews, Phillip, David, Christopher and George Decker, all of Arnold, Md. He was preceded in death by his sister, Erica Ruth Sciance. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17, in the funeral home chapel by the Rev. Bruce Carper and Rev. Grayson Leach. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the Brain Injury Association of Virginia.

I spent six years on the Eisenhower with Tom and he was a very good friend. The world is a lesser place with his passing.

My deepest sympathies go to you. Tom was my best friend during my time aboard the USS Eisenhower. He was a good man, and will be missed.
