Evelyn Rountree

Evelyn W. Rountree SUNBURY - Evelyn White Rountree, 91, of Orchard Street, died Monday, April 5, 2010, in Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City. Mrs. Rountree was born in Perquimans County and one of six children born to the late Wayland L. Sr. and Novella Winslow White. A homemaker, she was a member of Damascus Christian Church and the Gatesville Senior Citizens Group. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, G. Emory Rountree and a daughter, Nancy McMurdy. Surviving are two daughters, Novella Spivey and husband Fred and Bessie Hinton and husband Phil, all of Sunbury; a son-in-law, Don McMurdy of Newport News, Va.; a sister, Marjorie Blanchard of Hertford; an aunt, Pauline Gregory of Elizabeth City; five grandchildren, Fred Allen Spivey and wife Monica of Sunbury, Elizabeth Spivey Fry and husband John of Holly Springs, Melinda Spivey Palamides and husband Tim of Roswell, Ga., Raymond McMurdy and wife Jennifer of Midlothian, Va., and Heather Hinton Zajac and husband Chris of Raleigh; eight great-grandchildren, Emma and Chris Fry, Matthew and Luke Spivey, Jacob, Alyssa, and Jenna Evelyn McMurdy, and Will Zajac; many nieces, nephews and extended family members. A funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. A private committal will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main St., Gatesville, who is handling arrangements. Friends may join the family in the church social hall following services or all other times at either daughter's home.
