Vernon Shealy Obituary

Vernon L. Shealy NORFOLK - Vernon Lanier Shealy, 85, passed away surrounded by his family on Friday, April 30, 2010. Mr. Shealy was born in Gilbert, S.C., and was the son of the late Mae Jumper Shealy and the late Vernon Shealy. He served in the United States Navy retiring after 23 years in 1965 with the rank of master chief. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. Upon his retirement from the Navy, he continued his naval career by founding the NJROTC program at Maury High School where he retired in 1985. He was a 1975 graduate of Old Dominion University. He is survived by his wife, Betty Carolyn Shealy; son, Mickey Vernon Shealy and his wife Judith H. Shealy; daughter, Debra Carolyn Ingham; and two grandsons, Dr. Jeffrey Shealy Johnson and his wife Dr. Jennifer Carter Johnson and Gavin Ingham. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, May 5, at 1 p.m. at Princess Anne Memorial Park with Pastor John Moxley of Azalea Baptist Church officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Azalea Baptist Church, 3314 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk, VA 23518. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.altmeyer.com. Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach, is in charge of the arrangements.
