Betty R. Lyon POWELLSVILLE - Betty Rawls Lyon, 76, of the 200 block of Commerce St., died Monday, May 24, 2010, at UHS Inpatient Hospice Facility in Greenville. Mrs. Lyon was born in Bertie County on Aug. 28, 1933, a daughter of the late Arthur and Sophie Jane Mizelle Rawls. She was a member of Perrytown Assembly of God Church and attended Powellsville Baptist Church. She was retired as a seamstress for Vanity Fair. Left to cherish her memory is her daughters, Glenda Jackson and husband Richard, Gloria Layton and husband Ray and Ginger Skinner and husband Carroll, all of Edenton, N.C., Grace Hoggard and husband Stan of Windsor, N.C., and Gay Feher and husband Johnny of Ahoskie, N.C.; sisters, Irene Jenkins and Shirley Meeker, both of Portsmouth, Jane Cullipher of Chesapeake and Evy Lou Hughes of Colerain, N.C. Mrs. Lyon is also survived by nine grandchildren, Ed Jackson, Justin Jackson, William Skinner and Thomas Skinner, all of Edenton, Raymond Layton of New Bern, N.C., Neal Hoggard of Greensboro, N.C., Sarah Hoggard of Windsor, N.C., and Rebecca Feher and Mary Caroline Feher of Ahoskie; four great-grandchildren, Ricky and Kristen Jackson of Edenton and Anna and Audrey Layton of New Bern; and a special friend, Sharon Privott of Winton, N.C. Besides her parents, Betty was predeceased by her husbands, Oscar Hoggard of Windsor, N.C. and W.H. "Skinny" Lyon of Powellsville, N.C.; a son, Jerry Neal Hoggard; a granddaughter, Samantha Ross Hoggard; and two brothers, the Rev. Willie Ralph Rawls Sr. and Robert Harold Rawls. A celebration of life graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 27, in the Ross Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Alex Carr and Rev. Brian Medlin officiating. The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today.
