Alpharetta Cuffee Obituary

Alpharetta J. Cuffee PORTSMOUTH - Alpharetta Cuffee, 91, went to be with the Lord on June 18, 2010. Born in Emporia, she was the daughter of the late Robert Jones and Henretta Harris. Mrs. Cuffee was a devout Christian and she served on the usher board at New Bethel Baptist Church and Cavalier Manor's Senior Citizen Committee in Portsmouth. She was predeceased by her husband, George W. Cuffee. She is survived by two nieces, Helen Harris of Norfolk and Pricilla C. Tennyson of Chesapeake; seven nephews, Willie L. Cuffee of Prince George County, Virginia, Anderson Benson of Virginia Beach, Melvin and Jimmie Harris of Norfolk, Larry Harris of Chesapeake, Ronald Harris of Portsmouth, retired Col. Michael Harris of Reston, Va.; cousin, John Taylor of Emporia, Va.; a host of great-nieces, -nephews, relatives and friends. She had a heart for people, putting others first before her own needs; while she did not have any children, she helped raise more than three generations of relatives giving a new meaning to the title, "a virtuous woman." A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26, in New Bethel Baptist Church in Portsmouth with Bishop James M. Whitaker presiding. She will be buried in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. There will not be a viewing, but the family will receive friends Friday, June 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. at 715 Hancock Ave., Portsmouth. Fisher Funeral Home, 1520 Effingham St., is handling the arrangements. www.fisherfuneral.com.
