Thomas Queen Obituary

Thomas A. Queen CHESAPEAKE - Dr. Thomas A. Queen, 71, passed away peacefully at his home June 27, 2010 surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Queen graduated from Oberlin College where he was a member of the varsity golf team. He obtained his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. He served as a surgeon for 20 years in the U.S. Navy, a career which included service on the USS Estes and USS Sanctuary during the Vietnam War. He was stationed at the Naval Hospitals in Jacksonville, Fla., San Diego, Calif., Rota, Spain and retired as the chief of surgery in Portsmouth. Following his retirement, and for another two decades, Dr. Queen continued to care for patients in the Portsmouth/ Chesapeake area as a private practitioner of general surgery. In his retirement, Dr. Queen was able to resume the practice of golf (at which he was quite adept), playing with a regular four-some. He was an avid reader, and in recent years, an amateur mathematician. The accomplishment of which he was proudest and that gave him the most joy was achieved with Blanche, his wife of 47 years - the successful raising and education of four daughters: two are practicing physicians and two are practicing attorneys. Dr. Queen is also survived by three grandsons. The youngest bears his name. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memoriam may be made to Bon Secours Hospice, 3636 High St., Portsmouth, VA 23707. Condolences may be sent to the family at Thomas [email protected].

Blanche: It was a privilege to be trained in my NRMC Portsmouth residency by Tom. He was the brightest most well read surgeon I have encountered in my career. All of the Portsmouth residents I know consider him a treasure in their surgical formation.
