Adelaide Eberly Obituary

Adelaide G. Eberly CHESAPEAKE - Adelaide Galbraith Eberly passed away peacefully Friday, June 11, 2010. She was born May 20, 1921 in Georgetown, Pa. Adelaide was predeceased by her parents, Lillian and William W. Galbraith and her husband, Byron T. Eberly, M.D. Mrs. Eberly received a B.S. in music education from Temple University and a master's in English with a minor in music from the University of Pennsylvania. Adelaide, also known as the "Tree Lady," raised thousands of dollars for trees to be planted all over Portsmouth for Arbor Day for 38 years. She received many awards including "Most Outstanding Volunteer of the Year." She was also recognized for her leadership and commitment to her community by "Celebration of Strong, Smart and Bold Women" by the Girls Inc. Center of Youth. Adelaide enjoyed writing poetry for her friends. She will also be remembered as a teacher-caller for the Beazley Promenades Square Dance Group and served as "Hands Chairwoman," Council of Garden Clubs President and R.S.V.P. Advisory Board, just to name a few. Mrs. Eberly will be truly missed by all her friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 7, from 7 to 8 p.m. in Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel. The funeral will be Thursday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home by the Rev. Robert Friend.
