Dear Nancy:
The news about John came as a shock. The last time you were in Pittsfield, John seemed much the same as always, a little worn around the edges but aren't we all. We had lunch and talked and reminisced. He invariably had stories of his children and grandchildren and it was obvious how much he loved them and took pride in them. He usually had a few "Nancy" stories too. I think he was a little bit in awe of the woman who shared the life they made together. I know he believed that marrying you was probably the most fortunate thing he ever did. Talking with John was always interesting and often informative. He had facts about everything. Art Dugas once told me that John was one of the most intelligent persons he knew. Art did not suffer fools gladly and compliments from him were rare. I agree with Art. One of my great pleasures was conversing with John at lunch or over a beer or whatever. It saddens me greatly to know that I will never have that opportunity again. I will miss him greatly.
Please know that you are in Ann's and my thoughts and prayers.
