Allison Gwaltney Dildy NEW YORK - Allison Gwaltney Dildy, an adjunct professor at CUNY/Hostos Community College, died Aug. 31, 2010 after a sudden illness. Allison Dildy was born Dec. 27, 1943 in Whaleyville, Va. He graduated from East Suffolk High School in Suffolk in 1961. He then attended Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina, where he received a BS in biology in 1966. He went on to complete a master's degree in sociology and medical sciences (1979) and coursework for a Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York City. Allison's primary career was in education. Throughout his career, he received numerous awards and recognition for teaching and mentoring. He began as a high school biology and chemistry teacher. He went on to be a lecturer at Queens College of New York in sociology. After receiving his degree, he served as an advisor to the dean of the Dental School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. He then went on to become a lecturer and adjunct professor at CUNY/Hostos Community College in the Department of Health and Human Resources/Urban Health Unit where he remained for the last 24 years. Here he loved and was loved by his students. His second career was in computers. He opened his own business, the Bronx Computer Emporium, in Bronx, N.Y. In its 18 years, the Bronx Computer Emporium also received numerous awards for leadership and service. It provided computer literacy skills, equipment, maintenance and training to individuals as well as small and large businesses in the New York City area. Allison was preceded in death by his father, Motzell Dildy; a brother, William Sweatt; and a sister, Vivian Langston. He is survived by four children, two daughters, Tonya Creque of Virginia Beach and Dr. Tamara Kuittinen of New York; two sons, Justin Dildy and Chay Dildy of New York; seven grandchildren, Jared Dessuit, Tatiana and Jamie Creque, all of Virginia Beach, Katja, Leena and Mikko Kuittinen and Maia Dildy, all of New York; his mother, Willie M. Dildy of Suffolk; two sisters, Marion Greene of Long Island, N.Y., and Cheryl Lee of Norfolk, Va.; a brother, James O. Sweatt Jr. of Stafford, Va.; and many other relatives and friends. There will be a memorial service Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 4 p.m. at Hostos Community College in Bronx, N.Y. An additional memorial service will be conducted at the "Benton Family Cemetery" on Freeman Mill Road in Whaleyville, Va., Saturday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. with a continuation and burial at sea at 6:30 p.m. at the "Dockside" pier at 3311 Shore Drive, in Virginia Beach.
